How does private health
insurance work?

Private health insurance provides cover for private medical care. It can often remove long waiting times for those needing treatment, providing peace of mind without putting your life on hold.

Typically you will pay a monthly or yearly premium with your chosen insurer and this fee will be based on a variety of different information about you such as age, location, how comprehensive your chosen plan is, your lifestyle and your medical history. Generally speaking, the more cover you add to your policy, the more expensive it will become.

What is health insurance for the over 50s?

Health Insurance when you’re over 50 can provide you with peace of mind that you will be seen quickly in that time of need.

As we get older, things are more likely to go wrong, so having health insurance can help put your mind at ease. Sometimes not knowing what is wrong can put a strain on you and your family’s life, so having access to that all-important quicker diagnosis for new symptoms, leading to your care in a comfortable private hospital can make such a difference in getting you back on track as quickly as possible, we know that retired life is so busy.

How does health insurance for the over 50s work?

The great news is that some of our insurers have no age limit when it comes to applying for cover, this means that there are plenty of options when looking for health insurance when you’re over 50.

We may even be able to find a policy that doesn’t exclude some common well-controlled chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, meaning that if you were to develop a new more serious acute condition in the future, such as requiring stents, or other cardiology needs you could be able to use your policy for this, subject to the right cover levels and insurers terms and conditions.

Menopause help

Even though treatment for menopause symptoms is not generally covered by health insurance, insurers have recognised that menopause can have a huge impact on a person’s life psychologically and physically and when going through menopause, you may struggle to know who to turn to for advice and support.

Some insurers have introduced channels that can offer help and support when approaching or going through menopause.

The support could be as simple as help with how to have a discussion with your NHS GP about your symptoms, all the way through to one-to-one virtual consultations or CBT sessions. Some insurers have teamed up with third-party companies to help you to understand menopause, manage symptoms, improve general health, and learn about HRT types or non-HRT treatment options.

Understanding your health

Some insurers actively encourage you to understand your health and wellbeing. You could have access to a simple free health check to help you keep an eye on your blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. If you want to know even more about your health, you could even have access to discounted more in-depth health checks.

You could even have access to discounted fitness wear and relaxation trips to help keep your physical and mental wellbeing on track.
