How does private health
insurance work?

Private health insurance provides cover for private medical care. It can often remove long waiting times for those needing treatment, providing peace of mind without putting your life on hold.

Typically you will pay a monthly or yearly premium with your chosen insurer and this fee will be based on a variety of different information about you such as age, location, how comprehensive your chosen plan is, your lifestyle and your medical history. Generally speaking, the more cover you add to your policy, the more expensive it will become.

What is family health insurance?

Health insurance for your family is the perfect way to have the peace of mind that you and your children have access to fast medical care in that time of need, instead of waiting for the NHS. Whether that’s for diagnostic tests to diagnose new symptoms or for an eligible operation and a comfortable stay in a private hospital. All insurers we work with will pay for a parent to stay with their child whilst they are in hospital, although age limits can apply.

Family medical insurance is much like individual or couples’ health insurance, but instead of having separate payments for each family member, you can cover all of you under one plan. This often means that there is only one payment for the whole family, and this could result in a discount for having multiple members on one plan.

What are the benefits of family health insurance?

One main benefit to family health insurance is access to a digital private GP for all insured family members, meaning you can talk to a qualified GP for you and your children’s needs from the comfort and convenience of your own home. These GPs can even provide you with a private prescription or provide you with a referral to a specialist, meaning that you can skip the queue and waiting times at your own local NHS GP surgery.

All our insurers offer full coverage for eligible inpatient and day patient cover, so if your family requires a procedure that requires you to stay in hospital the eligible costs will be covered in full. We can also look at adding additional outpatient cover, meaning that you will also be able to claim for consultations with a specialist, outpatient diagnostic such as MRI, CT & PET scans, blood tests, x-rays, and outpatient physiotherapy (depending on the insurer).

There are also options to add mental health cover for talking therapies and psychiatric care, annual travel cover for when you go on holiday abroad or further manipulative therapies such as chiropractic care or acupuncture.

Different hospital options are available, meaning you could have access to your local private hospitals, or you can opt to upgrade your policy to include access to central London hospitals like Harley Street or Portland Hospital for Women & Children. Some insurers will include all central London hospitals for children under 18 regardless of what hospital option is chosen for the family plan.

When can I add my children?

Children can be covered from the day they are born and depending on which insurer you’re with, they may even be covered for free under your policy. The sooner you add your newborn the more likely they will be covered with no medical exclusions on their plan, giving you peace of mind that they will be covered for any new medical condition they may develop.

Once your coverage is active, most insurers will pay a childbirth cash benefit for the birth or legal adoption of a new child, although typically you would only be eligible for this after having an active policy for at least 10 months.

Special cover for children

Some insurers have recognised that children can sometimes require some additional care whilst growing up and offer a contribution towards covering some specifically listed additional procedures for children:

  • Pinnaplasty surgery for prominent ears
  • Treatments to help port-wine stain on the face
  • Speech therapy needed as a result of developmental delay
  • Breast reduction, including treatment for excessive male breast tissue (gynaecomastia)
  • Access to CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy)

Health insurance & pregnancy

Although routine pregnancy is not generally covered by health insurance, insurers will offer cover for specific pregnancy complications such as ectopic pregnancy. We can discuss these details with you further when recommending your options.
